Emraan Hashmi, who stormed into B-town lip-first, has changed for two upcoming movies and has grabbed the painter’s brush. In his yet to be released thriller ‘Raaz - The Mystery Returns’, he plays a clairvoyant artist. In his next venture, Kunal Deshmukh’s untitled thriller (again!), he plays a brush-wielding visionary all over again. Set in flood-hit Mumbai of 2005, the film has a more serious take on humanity than his previous sensual flicks.With a kissing-streak in his career, this new brush-toting penchant is hinting at an image makeover from the hip to the solemn - in fact, from the physically inclined to the intellectually inclined. Earlier Emraan, was reported to have declared he had had enough of paints and brushes after the shooting of ‘Raaz…’ The new role came as a surprise but Emraan welcomed the good script with alacrity.The painting role has stuck to him with such vengeance now that he has started dabbling in colours in his spare time, too.“Emraan has now become more serious about art and whenever he has time off from shoots, he practises his brush strokes,” a close friend of the actor remarked.

Emraan Hashmi has learnt a lot of painting in the last few days. If you are thinking if he is following on the footsteps of Salman Khan, you are not. The actor took the painting lessons for his next release Raaz – The Mystery Continues. Emraan plays a painter who can see what evil will befall on someone through his sudden visions and then he draws those incidents, exactly how he sees it, on canvas. “Painting is a very difficult thing to do. It might look that you just need to hold the brush and do something with colours but it’s very difficult. My role is that of a painter and I wanted to do that perfectly. I wanted to learn how to hold the brush properly, how to do those strokes etc. I have certainly not become a painter but yes, I have learnt the basics,” he says.There are very few Bollywood horror films which have done well in the box office. We quizzed Emraan on why he took the risk of treading this genre when he was tasting success with romance or dramas?

“I have always done different films. So when I read the script of Raaz – The Mystery Continues, I wanted to challenge myself and see whether I can be successful in this genre, too,” he says.Emraan has also stuck to his promise of not kissing on screen in Raaz – The Mystery Continues. He says, “I was getting typecast by doing the same thing. I realised that I had to do something different. Thankfully, people have accepted this new me,” Emraan says.We also asked him about co-star Kangana Ranaut who is known to be moody.

“These are just stories about her. She is a very sweet person and everyone goes through mood swings but that doesn’t mean that a person is bad. We gelled very well,” he signs off.

Emraan Hashmi fooled the crowd

Emraan Hashmi was recently seen in New Delhi shooting for his next film which is tentatively titled Raftaar. Facing the camera for the film was a new experience for Emraan since for the first time, he was a part of an experience that resembled a guerilla shoot. Says Emraan Hashmi, “The film belongs to drama genre and I play a journalist. There are quite a few scenes in the film which require to be shot to create a real time real life feel. I remember shooting in the Paharganj area of New Delhi which is very densely populated. While the demand of the scene was that it goes through guerilla style shooting, we also couldn’t bring out camera in open due to crowds mushrooming from all over.”In fact in order to ensure that crowds did not interfere with the film’s shooting, the film’s crew came up with an innovative idea. They placed camera and other equipments in an alternate location and simulated it as a venue for the film’s shoot. While crowds gathered expecting Emraan Hashmi and the rest to make an appearance, he along with his director and other crew members were coolly shooting in a lane behind.

“It was funny but we couldn’t help it”, smiles Emraan, “We had tight deadlines to meet and there was no way we could have afforded a delay in shoot while spending time in controlling crowds. Also, quite a few scenes had to be shot in night. Ultimately, we didn’t have any other choice but con the Delhi crowds!”Emraan is quite impressed with first time director Shamim Desai. “He is an experienced guy and has directed quite a few prestigious ads in last so many years. The man is very clear in his vision and has a smart way of canning shots.”Rumored to be budgeted at close to 25 crores, the film stars Neha Dhupia as the lead opposite Emraan Hashmi and is produced by Percept Picture Company.

A ‘decent’ proposal

A shopping experience turned out to be not-so pleasant when Emraan went shopping at a local mall in Kuala Lampur recently. A group of burqa-clad women came up to him and advised him to deviate from his track record of titillating films and instead do decent films.
Our source said, “Emraan was shooting for Raftaar in Kuala Lumpur. Since he had some time on hand, he decided to go shopping in a mall near his hotel. At the hotel some teenaged girls recognised him and asked him for his autograph. Emraan was more than happy to oblige. He got chatting with them and willingly posed for pictures with them. However, suddenly a group of six burqa-clad women came up to him and, instead of appreciating his performance, they started giving him a piece of their mind. They began lecturing him on how he should be doing decent films, instead of titillating films.”Emraan was completely taken aback at this dose of wisdom. He was too flabbergasted to react. The source added, “The burqa-clad women advised him to do films which a family can watch together. They accused him of misguiding youth through his films, wherein they learnt to woo married women. They also urged him to be more responsible towards the youth. In fact, they refused to leave him until he promised to do decent, family-oriented films.”

When contacted, Emraan Hashmi tried to evade the question. However, when we persuaded him, he laughed it off and said, “Maybe I should start doing family-oriented films. They are my audience. I appreciate their views and will definitely do the needful.”

From Jannat , Emraan Hashmi is set to take a plunge into the Mumbai underworld. The actor is said to be in consideration for director Milan Luthria’s film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai which will be jointly produced by Ekta Kapoor and Sunil Shetty . The movie will be a crime thriller based in the underworld in the 1980s and its plot will reportedly have real life characters like Haji Mastan, Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. While Sanjay Dutt has been finalized to play the role of Mastan, Emraan Hashmi is under consideration for the part of Dawood. Producer Sunil Shetty says Dutt suited the role of the gangster in the film to a T. While Milan Luthria has expressed his sincere wish to work with Emraan, whom he considers a talented actor.The movie will not just focus on the underworld in the 1980s but also see its evolution through the years to the present day of its nexus with international terrorist networks.

Just one query, Milan? Will the don in the film be allowed to kiss? How else would dear Emi manage!

Known as a serial kisser Emraan Hashmi is trying to get out of this tag. Well it seems he is trying to be different by doing films of varied genres. Apparently the actor was in talk with Warner Brothers for their next, which Emraan has now flatly refused to be a part of. A friend close to Emraan explains that he was in negotiations with Warner Brother since the time he was shooting for Jannat . However the producers were keen to sign him but simultaneously wanted to see the result of his forthcoming film Jannat . However, Emraan who wasn’t happy with the wait and watch game of the producers, quoted a high price. And the latest on it is that he has refused the film. Now the makers of this untitled film which will be jointly produced by Tandav Films are in search of an actor. It is also believed that the filmmaker Joy Augustine who was supposed to direct the film, has backed out because of date problem. However Meghna Gulzar has been signed to direct this film.

Now that Emraan has said no, the producers are keen to sign R Madhavan. The film is about ways to fill romance into a married couple’s relationship. It’s story has been written by Jaideep Sahni. Interestingly Madhavan has a romantic hero image which is apt for the character of this film informs an industry insider.

Well what can we say, Emraan’s loss may benefit Madhavan!

Post the super success of their last film, JANNAT, the team of Vishesh Films and their in-house hero Emraan Hashmi have already moved on to their next.
The queen of hills, Shimla, welcomed the hit pair of Emraan Hashmi and Kangna Ranaut (GANGSTER), who is at present in Himachal capital to shoot for RAAZ 2. The Himachal portion of the much talked about sequel to the super hit, Vikram Bhatt’s RAAZ (which starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea) commenced in the picturesque town of Shimla and its beautiful surroundings. The local girl, Kangna Ranaut (she is from Manali), appeared to be at home and looked really happy to be back in her home state. On Friday, the lead pair shot for various scenes (mostly horror/emotional) at the famous British Resort. On Saturday, director Mohit Suri picturised a few romantic scenes, the location being the picturesque Naldehra and its world famous golf course. Kangna and Emraan intermingled freely with the tourists obliging them with autographs.The unit will stay on for a few more days before moving on to Kangna’s home town, Manali.

Sreya Basu catches up with the Bollywood Gangster…oopps, rockster. Emraan Hashmi on the latest in his life and career. Let’s start with your latest release Jannat. Jannat is a love story with the background of cricket and the dark alleys of the game. The subject is contemporary where heaven is all about money, luxury and crime.Are you comfortable playing a hero with negative attributes?
Generally in Hindi films we take it for granted that a hero should be all white a character while it’s the villain who will portray a black character.In this film I play a grey character that people can relate to. After all none of us are all white or black, but grey. The first half of the film portrays Arjun (my character in Jannat), a reckless youth obsessed with moneymaking and in the process gets into cricket betting and match fixing racket.But in the later half audience will know about the circumstances that led him to this racket and they will feel sorry for him.

You play a match fixer in the film. How have you prepared yourself for your character?
I met a few cricket bookies in Mumbai to get a better understanding of their life and life style. Besides I read all the cricket betting controversies that took place in the last 30 years.

Is Jannat deliberately released during the IPL?
It was not deliberate but it’s good that the film is released during the IPL. Cricket betting is something that you can never put on check.

Bengali singer Rupam Islam has sang in this film. Any comments?
Rupam is a fabulous singer and his song Jannat jahan has added a new flavour to the film.

Why is that you always work with the Bhatts (even Jannat is produced by Mukesh Bhatt)?
First they are my family and hence I feel at home working for them. Secondly Bhatts make films that are socially appealing and different at the same time.

You said you will never kiss on-screen. But Jannat has two kissing scenes. Any comment?
I am sorry that by mistake I said I will never kiss on-screen.

So you are back to your serial kisser image?
Every actor kisses on and off-screen. But only Emraan Hashmi gets projected as a serial kisser by the media. Whether it is a joke or something serious, I am cool with it.

Every song of all your films is a super hit. What is the secret behind it?
Credit goes to my music directors, singers and lyricists. But at the same time I am very particular about my songs. Role kaisa bhi ho gaane achche hone chahiye.

What are the films in the pipeline?
At this moment there is only one film-Raaz 2. It is a horror film directed by Mohit Suri. Kangana Ranaut is the lead lady in the film.

Friday saw the release of Bhatt camp’s ‘Jannat’ which revolves around match fixing in cricket. The makers of the film went on for a pre-release bash for the cast and crew of the film on May 15. Also celebrating the debutante actress Sonal Chauhan’s birthday, the party continued till late night. It was here that Emraan brought in his creativity. Attired in a cool white T-shirt, Emraan had eyeballs popping due to the funky slogan on his T-shirt which read “IFL. - Indian Fixed League- starts May 16”. Now, that is a real unique way of drawing attention both to oneself and to the film!

My film should be an Emraan Hashmi film

One look at Emraan Hashmi’s filmography and you know that the young man loves to do films which aren’t too crowded for comfort.With Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘Chocolate’ as an exception which had Anil Kapoor, Suneil Shetty, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan for his company, Emraan has mainly done two/single hero projects.While ‘Murder’ (Ashmit Patel), ‘Gangster’ (Shiney Ahuja), ‘Good Boy Bad Boy’ (Tusshar Kapoor) and ‘Aksar’ (Dino Morea) did have another male lead sharing screen space, Emraan still managed to tower above his contemporaries in most of the projects.Now his upcoming ‘Jannat’ is a solo hero project, just as ‘Awarapan’ and ‘The Train’ were last year. Is it a conscious move?”More than being termed as a conscious move, I would term it is a well thought move”, says Emraan after a brief pause, “For me the film should work for me and I should be able to work for the film. It has to be mutual.”Please elaborate. “I don’t want to be a part of a multi starrer for the heck of it. I mean it shouldn’t be the way that ‘if Emraan Hashmi is in the film, it becomes bigger, so let’s add him on.’ There should be substance and a reason behind my inclusion”, adds Emraan Hashmi.Continuing in a confident tone, Emraan also shares another thought, “Also, the film should be able to sell on my name too.I don’t want to be a part of the situation where a film has a big name as it’s selling factor with Emraan Hashmi as an added attraction. Sorry, I may rather have my film as an Emraan Hashmi, even if that means going solo.””There is no point in joining the fray just because so many other leads around me seem to be doing that. A package film is good as long as it has good share for everyone involved. The moment one has to struggle and fight for something like this, it ceases to be a worthwhile exercise.”Concludes Emraan Hashmi, “I am here to do great roles. ‘Jannat’ is one of them and yes, it is a solo hero film. If I get a script which surprises me, even though it requires a multi starrer set up, I would jump on it. Ultimately, what matters is a project which gives me an ample opportunity to demonstrate my acting capabilities.”
