Amitabh-Mithun: Who’s the better beggar?

Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty, who had acted together in Agneepath and won acclaim for their respective roles, are now pitted against each other in two separate films. Amitabh is playing a beggar in Shoojit Sarkar’s film Shoebite, and Mithun is playing one in Girish Girija Joshi’s Zor Laga Ke…Haiya. What’s more, the look of both actors is almost the same, white beard and long white hair (not grey), with a beige bag on the shoulder. While Shoebite is a love story, Zor Laga Ke… is a film on the environment. But ultimately, it all boils down to – who’s the better beggar!

Do you think ICL roped you in as the owner of its Kolkata team, Royal Bengal Tigers, in order to match the IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders?
— he is way up there! A game is a game, but it’s entertainment too. Maybe, ICL thought my guy-next-door image would work. Kapil Dev has told me to unearth talent from every nook and cranny of Bengal. I want to see Royal Bengal Tigers as a club that fights to win, rather than establishing it as a team I own.

Will it be Mithunda versus SRK in cricket?

SRK is a reigning superstar and there is no ego clash between us. Moreover, his team is different from mine, and so the comparison is useless. We are all here to make the game more entertaining.

But don’t you feel Mithunda has an added advantage in Bengal?
How can I comment on it?

With such a strong team, do you think Kolkata Knight Riders will be more popular than Royal Bengal Tigers?
Nobody can predict the future. I give my 100 per cent in whatever I do. The rest is all about destiny and luck. But I believe hard work pays off ultimately.

Is it just passion for sports that brought you here?
Let me put it this way — I’m here 60 per cent for my passion for sports and entertainment and 40 per cent for business. At the end of the day, I’m not here to lose money.

Wasn’t football your first love?
It still is!

We heard that you spent crores running into triple figures to buy the team?
It’s more than that, but I can’t divulge the exact amount owing to legal constraints.

How do you plan to shape up your team?
I have just signed the contract! Give me some time and I will let the media know about my strategy.

Do you approve of players being auctioned?
Amra toh korchhina . And I can’t comment on what others are doing. Amar ektai lokhho — amader lore jitte hobe !

Some actors are buying teams even though they are unaware of the technicalities of the game…
It’s an open market now. After all, the more the money, the higher the entertainment factor.

Will you take a break from films to focus on cricket?
Not at all. I have just completed shooting for Phir Kabhi, Zindagi Tere Naam and a few other films. Shooting for Chandi Chowk to China and Luck will start soon. There are a few films on the floors in Tollywood, too.

Could we see you wielding the bat or shaking a leg during matches?
No! I can’t play a match, nor will I perform. I will be there to cheer my team.

Shah Rukh Khan has got some serious competition on the cricket field with none other than Mithun Chakraborty. DADA VS BADSHAH: Experts feel the rebel league opted for Mithun to counter SRK’s massive propaganda mileage.
Days after the gala launch of King Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders team for the multimillon dollar Indian Premier League (IPL), rival Zee-promoted Indian Cricket League (ICL) has roped in Mithun to be the franchisee owner of one of its sides Kolkata Tigers.Shah Rukh bought his IPL team for $75 million. It is not yet known how much Mithun paid for his team, which has Craig Macmillan as captain, Lance Klusener, Rohan Gavaskar and Upul Chandana among others.Experts feel the rebel league bosses opted for Mithun, who rose from the ranks in Kolkata to make it big in Mumbai films and still holds a huge fan following in the City of Joy, to counter the massive propaganda mileage the IPL got in the city and across the country after Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment won the franchisee rights for the Kolkata Knight Riders.Mithun’s presence could also help in boosting the brand image of the Craig Mcmillan-led team, which has attracted little attention from the media or sports aficionados ever since it came into being last year.Mithun admitted his son of the soil image would win him some additional votes from cricket buffs. But beyond that, he did not wish to go into any comparison with SRK. To encash on his popularity across the state, Mithun was in favour of changing the name of the side to Royal Bengal Tigers.“My fans across the state stay up whole night to have a glimpse of me. Why should I confine my team only to Kolkata and deny the rest of the state?” the actor was quoted by PTI.Mithun said he would try to recruit some new players and support staff for the side. He also said he would lay stress on unearthing talents from the grassroot level in Bengal.But this battle of the actors on the cricket field will not be easy. According to reports Shah Rukh Khan has apparently approached popular Bengali music composer Bappi Lahiri to compose some more songs for his team.Bappi would be composing three songs, which would be sung by him, Usha Uthup and a Bengali band called Bhoomi.So, here’s to one big musical battle. But we will have to wait and watch to know which team is a bigger sport.

Anthony Gonsalves not to be released in Bihar

‘My Name is Anthony Gonzalves’ has been banned in Bihar. The reason being an ongoing tussle between the actor, Mithun Chakraborty, and a local producer -distributor, due to which Mithun da’s films are banned in Bihar. Mithun plays a priest in the film.The dirft dates back to the time when Dada’s Bengali film entitled ‘Coolie’ was dubbed into Bhojpuri without the actor’s consent and by using someone else’s voice in dubbed Bhojpuri film. The incensed actor retaliated by refusing to return money paid as signing amount for another proposed film to be made by the same Bihari producer-distributor.Niwas is obviously disturbed and says, “I had no clue about Mithun-da’s ban in Bihar. It seems so strange to be kept out of the state where my first film Shool was set. I really wouldn’t want Anthony Gonzalves to be be kept out of Bihar. But I don’t know how I can help the situation.”
