Emraan on reality show, Pritam walks off in disgust

Emraan Hashmi was the celebrity guest for the reality show ‘Voice Of India’ on Monday, 25 February. While recording, in the middle of the shooting a female member of the audience ran to stage to kiss the serial-kisser on his lips. Whether it was a planned publicity stunt or not is unclear, but the entire turn of events left the judge composer Pritam Chakraborty so upset that he walked out of the show in disgust. “If the whole thing was planned then all I can say is, the show is digging its own grave,” says the appalled music director Pritam Chakraborty about the bizarre event. Recalling the embarrassing episode Pritam says, “It was all so sudden and disgusting. Voice Of India is a show about children, and encouraging children’s talent. We can’t have such cheesy behaviour on this show. Also, the Bhatts and Emraan Hashmi were my special guests. I had to make my displeasure very clear. So I did walk out.” Pritam also added, “Voice Of India has the potential to give us deserving winners. I don’t want it to end up being just another TRP-hungry music show.”

It almost didn’t happen for the first debutant of 2008.Nikhil Diwedi was almost ousted from his debut film My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves when the corporate house which director E Niwas approached to produce the film, insisted the director work with Viveik Oberoi instead of the newcomer. When confronted with this historical trivia on the destiny of his debut Diwedi demurs. “I wouldn’t like to name anyone. But an actor who was very hot and happening a few years ago did want to do My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves. My director Niwas was very clear that the script would only work with a newcomer, and that too me. He threw all caution to the winds and decided to produce Anthony on his own along with Sahara One,” divulges Diwedi who claims to be a diehard Bachchan fan. “I remember as a child watching Mr Bachchan in Suhaag. Today it’s a coincidence that my debut film gets its title from a popular song in a film featuring with Mr Bachchan. That isn’t all. No one knows this. But I was actually supposed to make my debut with a small role that E Niwas had offered me in an Aftab Shivdasani-Esha Deol romance called Jaane Kaise Kab Kahan, again a song from a Bachchan flick. I love that title, and I’ve asked Niwas to give it to me for a future film,” gushes the newcomer who claims to be finely- tuned to every detail about Hindi cinema. Fortunately for Nikhil, he desisted from playing the bit role of Esha’s fiancé in the shelved film.”What has to happen, will happen,” philolosophizes the youngster with oodles of confidence. Nikhil plays a bartender and a Bollywood struggler in My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves. He’s all praise for his co-star Amrita Rao. “Five years have passed since she came into the industry. Even today Amrita’s hunger and anxiety to excel in every shot remains unchanged. I like that. Somewhere I too want to be insecure even after 25 films.” In fact Nikhil has already got three more films in his kitty. “One is a remake of Rahul Rawail’s 1978 Sunny Deol starrer Arjun which Shivum Nair is directing and Anurag Kashyap is writing.” The original film about an unemployed youth being sucked politics and corruption is no longer valid. Kashyap is re-writing the script for Nikhil Diwedi. “Unemployment is no longer a burning issue,” opines Nikhil. “Today with so many avenues of work for youngsters like call centers, I think Arjun needed a new interpretation. Besides Arjun I have two other films to be produced by K Sera Sera and Sahara One.” Nikhil Diwedi seems to have found the most appropriate godfather in Shah Rukh Khan who apparently has taken the newcomer under his wing. Nikhil apparently hangs around Khan quite often. Surprisingly the debutant pooh-poohs the sugar-daddy theory. “I think too much has been made of Shah Rukh’s interest in my career. It isn’t even a fraction of what it’s made out to be. Sure his company Red Chillies is the line producer of My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves. But that’s because he believed in the project Beyond that, Shah Rukh’s interest in me and my career is, I think,reasonable and very sweet. He did release the music of my film. Wouldn’t he do that for any newcomer who requests him to?” Clearly this newcomer has his act together. “I’m aware that 2007 had a large number of commendable male newcomers. Should I be happy to be coming in 2008 ? I don’t think so. Every film and actor have their own destiny. How I’m accepted by audiences doesn’t depend on the competition but my intrinsic merits.I’ll survive not because of competition or Shah Rukh’s backing but only if audiences approve of me” That we shall find out on Jan 11 when My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves releases.

The year 2007 gave Bollywood a parting hit in “Taare Zameen Par”, Aamir Khan’s directorial debut about a child with learning disability. The golden run is likely to continue in 2008 too with the New Year releases promising a bouquet of romance, thrillers and period dramas.The first mega release of the year is Sahara One Motion Pictures’ “My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves”. It will introduce newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi, who is already being billed as a Rs.1 crore star.Directed by National Award winner E. Niwas, the film boasts of three other National Award winners - Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Pawan Malhotra and has Amrita Rao as the leading lady. The actress is riding high on the success of “Vivah”.In the same week, “Halla Bol” will mark the return of maverick director Rajkumar Santoshi, who was burrowing after “Family”, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, bit the dust.This time Santoshi has teamed up two veterans - Pankaj Kapur and Ajay Devgan. The film, inspired by murdered theatre activist Safdar Hashmi, sends a social message. It urges people to raise their voice against injustice.At the end of the first month of the year, Rohit Shetty of “Golmaal - Fun Unlimited” fame will serve another comic recipe garnished with thrills. Titled “Sunday”, the film stars Shetty’s favourite actor Ajay Devgan,along with Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia.In the second week of February, Ashutosh Gowariker’s most awaited historical romance “Jodhaa-Akbar” will be unveiled. Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood’s superhero, will be seen romancing Aishwarya Rai as the Mughal emperor Akbar. Aishwarya plays Jodha.The slick thriller “Race” follows. Directed by director duo Abbas-Mustan and produced by TIPS Films, the film boasts of an ensemble of stars, Saif Ali Khan, Akhshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy.Another offering from the Tips stable in 2008 is “Kismat Konnection”, which has Shahid Kapur and Vidya Balan in the lead roles. Aziz Mirza has wielded the megaphone for the film.The months ahead will also see Venus Records & Tapes Pvt. Ltd unspool a series of films starting with “Maan Gaye Mughal E Azam”. Directed by Sanjay Chhel, it stars the hit pair of Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose again. The irrepressible Paresh Rawal will lead the cast, which will also feature huge talents like Pawan Malhotra.Besides, White Feather films will release “Woodstock Villa” that will introduce Sikandar Kher - son of acting giants Anupam and Kirron Kher.Muddassar Aziz’s “Dulha Mil Gaya” and Rumi Jaffrey’s “God Tussi Great Ho” are also in the assembly line.The first half of the year will be dominated by Ajay Devgan, who will release his home production “U, Me Aur Hum” in April. Ajay stars with his wife Kajol in the movie.In the same month, Harry Baweja’s sci-fi “Love Story 2050? which is also his son Harman’s launch pad, will hit the marquee. Also, Yash Raj Films’ first release of the year “Tashan” will open in 2008. Starring Saif and Kareena, the film is directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.It will be followed by Ravi Chopra’s production “Bhootnath” and Ram Gopal Varma’s “Sarkar Raj”, a sequel to “Sarkar”.The year 2008 will also see the launch of “Kambakth Ishq”. Directed by Sabir Khan, it is from the successful team of Sajid Nadiadwala and Akshay Kumar who gave the hit “Heyy Babyy”.Kareena Kapoor, who is the highest paid actress in Bollywood, will be cast opposite Akshay Kumar in the film that seems to be a blockbuster in the making.After the talked about “Shootout In Lokhandwala” and the innovative “Dus Kahaniyan”, Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Films will continue to tread the uncharted path in “Pankh” and “Alibaug”.Bipasha Basu plays the female lead in “Pankh”, which also introduces Maradona Rebello and Sudipto Chattopadhyay.
