“My lifestyle has changed completely after the heart attack. Looking back it’s hard to believe I went through such a health scare. If it wasn’t for that life-changing experience, I wouldn’t be in a relationship with Kareena right now. I hardly drink. Don’t even look forward to drinking any more. I don’t smoke or party.”

Vidya Balan:” I used to catch Nach Baliye sometimes. Otherwise no tv show has me really hooked. When I’ve the time I watch film. used to be an avid tv watcher before I joined films. Now I’ve become very impatient.

When I watch tv I just surf restlessly. A lot of the fare is uninteresting to me. Since I don’t have the time to follow the soaps I end up watching just the news or music channels.

Even the news channels are so tacky sometimes. These things that they put on anything in the name of news. I don’t enjoy surfing. Because a lot of the stuff is just a carryover from Bollywood I might as well watch a film. I enjoy the music-talent shows.

These shows have given us so much singing talent. However one aspect of these shows upsets me. People on these shows come just for 15 minutes of fame and not for the love of the arts. Sorry if I sound judgemental. But no one seems to have his or her priorities right on these shows.

Saif Ali Khan: “My favourite tv shows are Entourage, Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Blackadder, Prison Break, 24, The X Files, Murder She Wrote and Who’s The Boss.

Naseeruddin Shah: “I only watch tennis and cricket on television. Also old movies. I tried watching the Olympics on television and gave up for obvious reasons.

Madhavan: ” I watch about an hour of television at the most. And that too depends on whether I’m shooting or not.My favourite tv shows are the ones on National Geographic, Untamed Africa, etc.

My favorite personality on TV is Barkha Datt. Barring a few most news channels are tabloids…find very hard to digest. Reality shows are now formated and predictable.

Kay Kay Menon: “I don’t normally watch daily soaps or reality shows. I only watch the news and sports channels. And National Geographic, Dicovery and History channel. I recently watched the music talent show Junoon Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka on NDTV Imagine. I loved it very much for its superior standards and quality of singing.

Raima Sen: “I only watch Friends ands Sex & The City. Both are hilarious and the characters are easy to relate to. I also like Fear Factor, though I’d never want to participate in it.

Dino Morea: “I only watch television for the sports, or if there’s important news. Or if I’m on some show.

Manoj Bajpai: “I only watch the news channels because I want to keep abreast of what’s happening in the world.”

We’ve heard of actors giving a limb for a role. But an eye? That’s precisely what would have happened if she had tried to look any more Chinese for Chandni Chowk To China.

“I don’t know how or why Nikhil Advani though of a South Indian with big round eyes to play Chinese. But he did cast me. I play a half-Chinese and half-Indian.. And to get my eyes to look less big and rounded and more slanted some special makeup artistes were brought in. They suggested tapes to stick around my eyes.”

Deepika then consulted her doctors. “And they cut the idea down in time. My doctors said if I stick those tapes on my eyes for twelve hours a day the shape of my face would change forever and I’d end up looking Chinese for the rest of my life. So instead we got my makeup artiste Mallika Bhatt to do my eye makeup in such a way that my eyes looked slanted.”

Deepika plays her second double role in Chandni Chowk… after Om Shanti Om. “Yes my second in a year. Two of out my three roles so far are double roles. It just gives me that much more confidence as an actor to know that directors think I can carry off a completely Indian and a Chinese look.”

So why did she do one-third of a film between two double roles? For love?

“You mean did I do Bachna Ae Haseenon for Ranbir? Certainly not! I wasn’t even seeing him when I signed the film. And I’m definitely mature enough to keep my professional and personal life apart…

No one can take advantage of me emotionally and professionally. If I wanted to work with Ranbir I’d be doing half a dozen films with him. We keep away from each others’ work space and connect whenever we both have the time.

But we’ve worked in only one film and we’re in the process of signing another. I’ve liked the script. But other details need to be worked out.”

Ever since Deepika Padukone did her second film with two other female leads she has had people asking her why she agreed to do it.

“A lot of people feel it was a mistake for me to do a film with two other heroines when I had done a solo-heroine film with Shah Rukh Khan at the start of my career. But I was very clear that I wanted to do it the minute I heard my part. And I’m glad I did it.”

From now on however, it’s solo-heroine projects for Deepika. “I’m looking primarily at solo- heroine films unless I’m as excited about a multi-heroine project as I was about Bachna….”

Did she like herself in Bachna? “OSO was a challenge because I had to play someone from the 1970s. Bachna… I had to play today’s character. For me the exciting part is when people say I was good in Bachna… in spite of having so little to do.When established actors tell me that I look good and can act I feel happy.”

Deepika believes she’s not in the industry to make friends. In fact Saif Ali Khan who shot Imtiaz Ali’s film with her in London says she’s professional and aloof.

“I’m more happy doing my shots and keeping to myself. Specially when I am shooting so far away from home I’d rather be on my own. Shooting this film was special because Imtiaz Ali is not a director who directs from the monitor.

He actually stands on the sets and gives instruction.He okays a take there and then. I’d be unsure of a shot but he’d okay it immediately. That’s a change. Like in Bachna Ae Haseenon, I play very contemporary character in Imtiaz’s film. It’s avery today character.”

Deepika rubbishes rumours of Rishi Kapoor calling her ‘Bahurani’.

“I don’t know where such things come from. I worked with him in London for Imtiaz’a film and we were thorough professionals. He was as warm towards me as he was with the rest of the crew.

I don’t have too many scenes with him. But yes we interacted for a longer time in London than we ever did in Mumbai. He’s a very caring person. He made sure everyone had khana on time.

When he arrives and leaves the set he greets everyone with equal warmth. We were working 12 hours a day. However my time after after work is mine.”

Deepika now shoots for Imtiaz in Delhi, and then the film is over.

“I’m only 22. And I’m very happy with the work that I’m doing, ” is her parting shot.

Saif Ali Khan has just been offered a chance by Imtiaz Ali to have his dream come true. The actor, who is passionate about playing the guitar, is all set to play a rock star in the director’s next venture.

“It’s a film called ‘Rock Star’. I don’t know if I’m equipped to handle it. Rock music is about a lot of attitude. More than just playing with an attitude, it’s a way of thinking. I need to be more true to the music. It’s easy to call any star a rock star. But I think it’s more than your lifestyle. It’s about being able to live your life the way you want.

Saif wants to work on the attitude and the guitar before doing “Rock Star”. Last week, he played the guitar for a charity concert for Bihar flood victims, but he played so hard that his fingers began to bleed.

“It has never happened before. My fingers are seriously cut. This is a sign of how seriously I played the guitar. And if I was a seasoned player that wouldn’t happen. So I want to pursue this seriously. As for my performance, I think of the two AC/DC songs ‘Livewire’ and ‘A Whole Lot Of Rosie’. I think I performed one really well, the other not so well. But finally it was fine,” he said.

Saif now intends to pursue guitar playing on a war scale. He owns two guitars and he intends to carry them with him to his outdoor shoots to play during free hours.

“I own two beautiful guitars - Fender Stratocaster (which Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton own) and a Gibson Les Paul that was gifted to me recently by the company’s branch in India. I think I’ll start using that. I want my guitar practice to go on side by side with the shooting. I will travel with my guitars.”

About the charity concert last Friday night, Saif said: “It went really well. I’d rate my performance 7 out of 10. But I was floored by how well the Pentagram lead guitarist Randolph played, also Tushar who’s done so much music for Yashraj Films. In comparison, I’m still learning.”

Saif is honest in his self-assessment.

“I seriously need to get out of the amateur player’s zone. I love rock music. It’s very liberating. It’s the same feeling as when we all went dancing as a teenager. The guitar helps me let off steam. I want to play with a group of friends, jamming and enjoying myself without any care in the world. On Friday night, I spoke to the other rock musicians. We’ve decided to play at some smaller centres.”

Girlfriend Kareena Kapoor gave his concert a miss to fulfil her professional commitment to Shah Rukh Khan. Any regrets?

“Work comes first. We both have to work, yaar. She doesn’t even have to explain. Even my children weren’t there. They’re in Delhi. But there was a huge turnout,” he said.

Poor Kareena Kapoor was left in a real dilemma when she had to choose between prior commitments to Shah Rukh Khan and watching her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan perform at a concert. However, she proved to be a thorough professional and skipped her beau’s concert to dance at a children’s day event hosted by SRK’s production company Red Chillies.

Tensions were hot with Kareena and SRK in the past when she refused to do Kal Ho Na Ho for money issues. Since then, they have called it truce of course but Bebo knows better than to restart drama with King Khan and kept her word to him.
