My character in ‘Heroes’ reminded me of my mother says Preity

Preity Zinta may now be garnering rave reviews for her role in “Heroes”, but she says that a lot of people discouraged her from doing the film. She, however, held her ground as she identified with the role as it reminded her of her mother Neelu Zinta. Once Preity signed on the film, she worked for days on her character, language and body language with her director Karnik. Says Preity: “The minute I read the script I knew I wanted to do it. You’ve no idea how many people discouraged me from doing Heroes. ‘Arrey, why do you want to play the mother of a growing child? Tujhko log buddhi kahenge’.But I was adamant. I fell in love with my character. She reminded me of my mother. So many people have told me I look like her, specially in my shaadi ka joda (wedding clothes). In “Heroes”, Preity plays a rustic Punjabi woman thrown into a crisis. “It was easy for me to identify with the Punjabi woman in ‘Heroes’ whose husband has died in the war. I come from an army background and I know what it is like to lose someone on the battlefront.”Preity unabashedly modelled the war widow’s role in “Heroes” on her own mother. “I always thought I looked like my father. But as I grow older I think I’ve begun to resemble my mom.

The other Punjabi woman I play in ‘Heaven On Earth’ was much harder to play. I had no reference points except my director who held my hand as I suffered with my character for all the physical abuse she has to face.”

Vansh Bhardwaj slaps Preity Zinta

It was an embarrassing moment for bubbly, chatty Preity Zinta when her co-star Vansh Bhardwaj unknowingly hit her hard while enacting a slap scene. “When we were shooting the film, there was a scene where my co-star had to slap me and, of course, it was a mistake as he took one step forward and actually went smack across my face. It was the most humiliating experience of my life because everyone saw me getting slapped,” Preity told reporters.Preity who has recently shifted from masala to off-beat films got to encounter with reality when the particular incident took place on the set of Deepa Mehta’s Heavan On Earth. “It changed my whole perception towards my role and I realized that it’s so terrible to strip a woman of her spirit. It’s better to die than to let your spirit die. This film took me to another zone; it just shattered me because I am someone who would immediately stand up for myself,” she said.In the film, she is playing a tortured woman whose life turns uglier than hell when she is tormented by her husband.

Preity who now opts for only matured social awakening film says that she will return to commercial flick if she is offered a role with “substance.”Her non-commercial flicks include, The Last Lear and Jahnu Barua`s Har Pal.

Priety Zinta has created customized salwar-kurtas bearing the Kings 11 logo for her women supporters for the IPL test matches that are expected to begin soon. A source close to the actress informed, “Priety discussed with her designer and created customized salwar kurtas bearing the Kings 11 (her team) logo for her supporters.”Priety wants her supporters to make their present felt on the field at the IPL matches to be held next year.”Priety has taken into consideration various aspects before creating the customized costumes for the women supporters. Since the IPL matches are to be held in Punjab, Preity opted for Salwar-kameez as short jersey would not go down well with traditional Punjabis.”Preity however put rumors to rest that she was going to screen Heroes for her IPL team.”It definitely sounds like a good idea. But I would have to make sure that it is subtitled otherwise how would the Aussies (who are a part of her team) understand my Hindi film,” she laughed.

Bollywood star Preity Zinta is ecstatic after winning the best actress award at the 44th Chicago International Film Festival for playing a battered Punjabi wife in Deepa Mehta’s “Heaven On Earth”.She is thankful to Anupam Kher for helping her get the right Punjabi diction for her role. The award was announced on Saturday and will be given on October 29. She has bagged the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress “for her strong yet subtle performance as a woman struggling to keep her dreams despite brutal realities” in the Feature Film Competition section.”It was my director Deepa Mehta who informed me on Saturday afternoon that I had won. I couldn’t go to Chicago, and neither could Deepa. Without any lobbying I’ve done it. I am so happy and excited.”I’m walking on sunshine. I can’t believe where I am,” added Preity who is also getting rave reviews for her performance in the just-released “Heroes”. Preity is immensely thankful to Anupam Kher for her convincing performance in both the films.”I attended his acting school (Actor Prepares) to get my Punjabi right for both the roles. He taught me how to pronounce the words properly. He has been a blessing.”What really pleases Preity is that this international award will help sell “Heaven On Earth” to a global audience.”It is a film in Punjabi and I felt the language would limit the appeal. But trust Deepa to break the cultural barriers.” Preity says she has no marriage plans right now.”I don’t feel the time is right.

Preity Zinta just can’t stop praising Salman Khan’s look in ‘Heroes’. She has never complimented her male costars. “This is for the first time that my male co-star’s look made me go completely in awe of him. Salman is a Jat Punjabi in the film and every time I’d see him in that get up I’d go, “Wow! You look so good, Salman!” Salman and I have worked together earlier in films but I had never complimented him ever. But Salman’s Sikh look swept me off my feet,” Preity said smiling. Obviously, Preity has enough reasons to praise Salman. In fact, recently when the actress was in London a couple of Sikh fans came up to her and complimented her on ‘Heroes’ as well as Salman’s look in the film. They also raved about the fact that they are waiting in anticipation for ‘Heroes’ to release.

They were even teasing her with Salman and that’s when the sporty Preity retorted tongue-in-cheek, “Well I am proud to be his wife… in the film that is!” Hahaha! Preity sure has a rocking sense of humor.

After Akshay ‘King’ Kumar made it look uber-cool, every actor is apparently vying to wear it as it were the new crown!No wonder then, Salman Khan has hopped on to the pagdi bandwagon as well, and his co-star Preity Zinta just can’t stop raving about his Sikh look in their forthcoming release Heroes.”We have worked together earlier, but I had never complimented him before. Preity Zinta is all set to prove that she is done running around trees and dancing in the Alps! Having showcased her ‘serious acting’ genes in The Last Lear, Preity will be next seen as Salman’s wife in Heroes!
An insider revealed, “Preity Zinta is bound to bag not only accolades but loads of awards for her performance in Heroes as this is by far her career’s best performance!”
Revealing more about the film, he added, “Preity plays Salman’s widow in Heroes who happens to be the sole bread winner of the family! She single-handedly strives to bring up her kids and earn a livelihood for them. She makes the protagonists in the film ponder over the thought of being a true hero! She defines heroism in the film and though there is Salman, Sunny and many others, her character is the most important and an author backed one.”"Preity drives tractors in the film and does almost everything that is not expected out of a woman normally”, added the unit hand.Salman, Sunny have apparently played lovely cameos in the film.
We got in touch with Preity to know more about her role but not willing to divulge much details she told us, ” Heroes is a film which is very close to my heart…Dino, Sunny, Salman, Vatsal, Amrita… all of us have put in hard work and I am sure people will like it. I have done a role which I have never attempted before but I would want you to see the film first, I won’t reveal any more details.”
Going by Preity’s fantastic selection of roles, we are sure Heroes will add another feather to her multifaceted hat.

Bollywood’s pretty lady Preity Zinta was literally slapped by a co-star while rehearsing for Deepa Mehta’s upcoming flick ‘Heaven on Earth’. The actress claims that she stood speechless in front of the whole crew and could barely utter a word. In an interview to a news daily, Preity said “It was a very tense shot, and I was nervous and so was the new actor [Vansh Bhardwaj], who plays my abusive husband. He gave me one phtaak, and for a moment or two, I felt like a train, a submarine and a plane rushing through my mind.”"All the preparation I had done went away,” she continued. “I found it very humiliating the way I had reacted. Everyone had seen me falling [as an actress] and they had also seen me going blank.”However, the actress after spending a few minutes in her vanity van, composed herself, “Of course, when I came out I went straight to the actor and told him the next time he does something like that, I would kill him”, adds Preity. Well so that’s the one-tight-slap the pretty lady can never forget!

Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal; what do these names stand for in Bollywood? Well, they are all big names in the world of hardcore commercial cinema, having innumerable successful potboilers to their credit. Of course, the megastar, Amitabh Bachchan tops the list by a huge margin.One might say that he has done Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black, which too (because of its theme and treatment) can be labeled as art house cinema. However, The Last Lear becomes special as it is the megastar’s first English language film, directed by National Award winning director, Rituparno Ghosh, whose association with the Bachchan family is well known.The film received an overwhelming standing ovation when the world premier was held at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival.

Later it was chosen for the famous Rome Cinema Fest and London Film Festival.Coming to the performances, all the major stars have put in scintillating acts. In the film, Amitabh Bachchan shows why he is called the God of acting. In fact critics are of the view that this is Bachchan’s best after Black. Preity Zinta sheds off her glam doll image and gets into the skin of the character. She plays a struggling actress (and a bad one in the film!) with elan. Arjun Rampal is just perfect in the role of a director. It is hard to believe that it is the same Arjun whom critics used to call wooden, just a few years ago.
