Minissha Lamba and Kangna Ranaut followed in her footsteps. Fashionistas swear by it. Health experts can’t stop complaining about its side-effects. But, no matter what, size zero makes news. Hollywood actress Michelle Pfeiffer defended men on the subject, insisting that women have created the myth of ‘skinny is attractive’. Priyanka Chopra went on record to say that Indian men would not like to have a size zero woman by their side. What exactly is the men’s pzoint of view regarding size zero? Is it a turn on or a turn off?. Writer and activist Ashish Kate is all for the idea of size zero. “I think size zero makes the person seem larger than life and out of this world, which supermodels are in a way. I wouldn’t mind going out with a woman like Jessica Alba. I feel we should have more of them,” says he enthusiastically. But, there are others who feel that size zero is a definite no-no. And, Shahwar Ali, is one of them. “I do not like the idea of size zero. In fact, I don’t think anybody in India likes the idea. Even when Kareena slimmed down for Tashan, it wasn’t appreciated by the public. I think the Indian man prefers a woman who is curvy. If you are a model, size zero may be a professional requirement, but otherwise I’m not open to the idea.”
Chaitanya Gokhale, a fashion director and stylist, is on the fence regarding this issue. “Size zero is not necessarily a turn off, but it’s not a turn on either. I feel a woman who may be a size zero is self-obsessed and thus becomes a fussy girl. You will never be able to have fun with her on a date. If you are looking at a short-term relationship, it’s okay. I would be open to the idea meeting someone for a coffee or a safe lunch. But, looking at it from a long term point of view, I would not consider it. But, if I have to date a size zero girl, it would definitely be Kareena,” quips he. Fashion director Marc Robinson feels the subject of size zero is blown out of proportion. “Size zero is a body type, not a part of a person’s personality. Designers usually prefer a size four. I would go out with a girl who could be size zero or size four. It does not matter to me. What matters is the compatibility, having a partner who understands you.”
Entrepreneur Yohul Chitre gives a neutral idea. “I wouldn’t have any qualms about dating a woman who is a size zero. But, I do feel that this topic has been glamourised to such an extent that people are not taking the health hazards seriously. If a person is comfortable in her own skin, then that is all that matters. I am neutral in that regard,” says he.There are always two sides to every story. Size zero or size four, what ultimately matters is the comfort level and, of course, a healthy self.
