Sometimes even a great launchpad and successful box-office stint doesn’t help a newcomer in Bollywood. Last year’s most talked about debutantes Prachi Desai, Sonal Chauhan, Sikander Kher, Rajeev Khandelwal and Mughda Godse were hailed in B-Town as superstars of tomorrow.
All of them had a BO blockbuster or a much hyped debut vehicle tucked under their designer belts in 2008. But that’s clearly not enough. A year later Ahmedabad Times takes a closer look at why some of them are still playing it safe and waiting for a right ‘second’ film…
Rajeev Khandelwal: His foray into Bollywood was in an unconventional film, Rajkumar Gupta’s critically acclaimed Aamir. Amdavad’s biggest export to Bollywood of course is busy preparing for his next film, Peter Gaya Kam Se which is slated to go on the floors, but that apart he doesn’t have anything in hand yet. Officially that is. “He is a very fine actor. He has really impressed me in Aamir. To debut with such a film and to do such a kind of role with so much conviction is amazing. I am sure he must be getting films but I guess he must be choosy,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Prachi Desai: From prime time queen to a glam debut in Rock On !! Prachi’s CV should have looked busier than it is now. She is doing only one film — Life Partner opposite Tushar Kapoor. Not that the petite youngster is worrying. She says, “I’ve put in so much hardwork, time and energy to reach here. I don’t want to disappoint myself or the audience. So far, I have put my heart in everything that I have been associated with —Kasamh Se, Jhalak Dikhla Ja and Rock On!! Fortunately all the projects have been successful. In future too, I’ll give my best and the rest is up to destiny.”
Sikander Kher: A starry lineage (he’s the son of Anupam and Kiron Kher) the curly locked goodlooker chose a film noir as his debut (Woodstock Villa) followed by another off-beat flick, Summer of 2007. A year later, Sikander still hasn’t made an official announcement about his projects. However, his co-stars believe that the actor is a powerhouse of talent. “I’ve worked with him. He is very promising and has an unconventional look which none of today’s actor have in them. He is a complete package. I think when a person wants to be successful he takes steps slowly so that he can reach higher. I’m sure he will do very well in future,” says Yuvika Chaudhary who starred opposite him in Summer 2007.
Mughda Godse: It wasn’t easy for the Marathi mulgi from Pune to grab eyeballs in a film (Fashion) that co-starred Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut. But Mugdha did that and got talked about in the same breath as her co-stars. And, she seems in no hurry to sign films. She’s playing the lead in Madhur Bhandarker’s Jail. “I’d not say that she is a great actress, but she is definitely good looking and gorgeous. I liked her confidence,” says Adarsh.
Sonal Chauhan: A print and commercial model, Bollywood’s new pocket Venus starred in 2008’s first hit, Kunal Shivdasani’s Jannat opposite Emraan Hashmi. A blockbuster of a debut later, Sonal’s moved down south and is doing Telugu and Kannada films. We also hear she’s been roped in to do an international project, but there has been no Bollywood film for her yet.
Here’s hoping that last year’s screen sparklers rise and shine quickly before it gets too late. Visibility matters a lot in Bollywood lest the audience forget these heart-throbs.
